Closing the loop: Commission adopts new circular economy package

On 2 December 2015, the European Commission announced the second version of their circular economy package. The aim of the package is to help European businesses and consumers to make the transition to a stronger and more circular economy.

Of significant relevance to the ResCoM project, a key focus area of the package is the production phase of the circular economy, looking at better product design and improved production processes to reduce raw material use and build new business opportunities. This includes economic incentives for producers to focus on better product design, particularly designing for reuse or disassembly for easier recycling. The package will also promote resource efficient and innovative industrial processes such as remanufacturing, through the financing programme Horizon 2020.

The proposed actions will contribute to closing the loop of product lifecycles through greater reuse and recycling, and bring benefits for both the environment and the economy.
